(The following is a dramatization)
The scene is a dark warehouse where 2 News Reporter Fields Moseley sits cuffed to a table. He is being interrogated by Gephardt.
"Why’d you do it Moseley?" Bill demands. Moseley sits defiant.
Gephardt has done his fair share of confrontations over the years but none quite this aggressive.
“Hey man, I’ve got all day,” Gephardt taunts. Again no response from Moseley.
Finally, Bill has reached his boiling point. Pounding his fist on the table he shouts at Moseley, “Why don't you just confess?”
Moseley smirks, "You got nothing on me, Gephardt."
Alright, clearly Bill is going to need a little help getting answers out of Moseley.
(End of Dramatization)
So he called in Dr. Gordon Barland. He is an expert when it comes to lie detector tests. Before he retired he traveled the country certifying polygraph machines for the Department of Defense. And at The Pentagon trained other on techniques used to beat lie detector tests.
While Gordon wires Fields up will the various probes, I bet you're wondering what the question is that Bill really needs answered from Fields???
Well, Fields has secretly written down a number between one and ten...and now he won’t tell Bill what it is!
Bill is neurotic that way!
The test begins:
"Was your number one?" Barland asks.
“No,” Fields replies.
“Was your number two?”
“No.”
“Was your number three?”
“No.”
Fields has been instructed to answer "no" to every question.
“Did you write the number 5?”
“No”
The theory: when Fields says "no" to the number he in fact chose, he'll be lying.
Will Barland be able to see it on the polygraph?
“Did you write the number 7?”
“No.”
The polygraph measures six different bodily reactions including heart rate, breathing, and cold sweats.
And as the test wraps up, the looming question: did fields beat the lie detector? Is his secret number safe?
“Now, let's have a look at the number 7 that you wrote on that piece of paper,” Barland says through a smirk.
How about that?
When you take a look at the chart, Barland points out, it’s easy to see.
Gordon says that is was the cold sweat that gave Moseley away.
Alright, but there are tricks to beat the lie detector.
There are websites that boast beating a polygraph is easy. They suggest you try biting your tongue, clenching your anal sphincter, and thinking exciting thoughts.
Fields studies the new techniques and now is confident he can beat the polygraph.
Fields secretly writes down the number 23...but secretly he wants Barland to think he wrote down the number "26."
Again, Dr Barland put Moseley through the examination.
So, did fields pull it off?
“I'm betting that the number that is actually on the piece of paper is 23...but you were trying to throw it to 26..." Barland says.
"You’re right..." Moseley and Gephardt laugh.
Wow.
So, can you beat a polygraph?
Barland admits it is possible but he says it's very, very difficult.
And he says an experienced polygrapher will usually see your countermeasures.

If the polygraph can detect if someone is lying or telling the truth to something as simple as a number, then it will definitely see the the lie or truth about something important.
